The Environmental Humanities Graduate Program integrates our need to know with our desire to act. This program aims to produce an interdisciplinary, intellectual, and creative space in which we are prepared: to reflect on what it means to be "human" in a world of entangled human and animal presences; to encourage creative and collaborative exchanges both inside and outside the classroom; and to think in a forward fashion both about new forms of environmental leadership and stewardship, and about the intersection of ecology and environmental justice.

"Welcome to the Environmental Humanities Graduate Program at the University of Utah -- a masters degree preparing students for careers as environmental leaders and thinkers.
These are exciting times in the field of environmental humanities, and the University of Utah is making its mark in this emerging discipline. This year, we hosted an international symposium, Future of the Environmental Humanities, heard from leading environmental thinkers like David Quammen, Kyle Powys Whyte, and Joni Adamson, and hired a new faculty member whose work addresses environmental justice and philosophy. With this foundation they emerge to engage our culture’s most urgent environmental problems and to offer it the most creative environmental solutions. "

The Master of City & Metropolitan Planning (MCMP) is accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. It emphasizes ecological resiliency, economic efficiency, and social justice through effective communication, collaboration, and innovation. The program’s blend of core knowledge and skills with selected specializations prepares students for professional and leadership roles in public, private, and nonprofit planning.
The program’s specializations include ecological planning, smart growth + transportation, urban design, and small town + resort town planning. In addition, students have the opportunity to integrate one of the department’s graduate certificates in real estate development, historic preservation, and urban design into their master’s degree program. Students are also encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary work, drawing from fields outside of planning.
Along with coursework in urban processes, history, law, theory, research, and analysis, the program features community-based planning workshops, urban design studios, and an individualized capstone professional project.

The LLM program is a full-time one-year program providing advanced training in environmental and natural resources law. Advanced courses and seminars are offered in areas such as environmental practice, protected lands, water law, wildlife law, the environment and business, land use, regulated industries, energy and natural resources, Indian law, toxic torts, and international environmental law.

A collaborative, interdisciplinary program grounding students in science, society and policy in order to effectively address global change and sustainability challenges.
The Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Sustainability program will train students to think and act across disciplinary boundaries. This transdisciplinary literacy will enhance graduate education without compromising disciplinary expertise. Students will be provided opportunities to develop their capacities as transformational change agents within their communities and institutions.
This program is a collaboration between the Graduate School, Sustainability Office, and the Global Change and Sustainability Center.

The SJ Quinney College of Law offers a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law to Juris Doctor candidates. The certificate signifies that qualifying students have demonstrated a specialized proficiency in environmental and natural resources law. To qualify for the certificate, students must:
-meet all general requirements for graduation from the college with a J.D. degree and complete a total of 20 semester credit hours which include:
-nine (9) semester hours consisting of Constitutional Law I, Administrative Law and either Environmental Law or Natural Resources Law, and
-eleven (11) credit hours of environmental and/or natural resources law courses from an approved list of classes;
-complete all curriculum requirements with at least a B- overall average and no grade lower than a C in any course taken to satisfy the certificate; and
-write a substantial research paper dealing with environmental law or natural resources law.

Offered jointly by the departments of Architecture and City & Metropolitan Planning, the Graduate Certificate in Urban Design is for graduate students and professionals interested in shaping the places we live, both how they will look and how they will function. Urban design involves a complex inter-relationship between municipalities, real estate developers, property owners, planners, architects, the construction industry, public administrators, and the general public. Students in this program will learn to engage in this process effectively in order to produce vital and vibrant places.
