A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

The University of Washington maintains a nationally recognized health care facility which is also a leader in green healthcare. In 2012 UW Medical Center earned an Environmental Leadership Circle award for the 6th consecutive year! The Environmental Leadership Award is the premier award from Practice Greenhealth which recognizes health care facilities that exemplify environmental excellence and are setting the highest standards for environmental practices and sustainability in health care. The UW Medical Center has earned this award for recycling more then 25 percent of the total waste stream, meeting mercury-free standards, implementing numerous other innovative pollution prevention programs, and being leaders in the community. Some of the green efforts in the 2011-2012 academic year have had a substantial environmental impact including reducing water consumption 13,500,000 gallons, $1,000,000 savings in energy reduction efforts, and diverting 133 tons of food waste to a local vendor for beneficial reuse.
