The purpose of a Sustainability Council (SC) is to execute the mission and vision of the Center for Sustainability. These are as follows:
Mission
The Center for Sustainability at the University of West Georgia (UWG) works to identify, share, and promote sustainability acitivites and initiatives on the UWG campus and in the community. The UWG Center for Sustainability serves as a clearinghouse for ideas and a promoter of actions that pertain to sustainability initiatives on campus and beyond.
Vision
Our vision is to become a regional leader in sustainability and one of the most innovative and recognized "green" campuses in Georgia.

The Sustainability Council has thirteem permanent seats with a representative from each College or School and the Library (8), a representative from Business and Finance (1), Student Affairs (1), University Advancement (1), Student Government (1) and one at large member (1).

The Center for Sustainability, via the its Director and the Sustainability Council, have made great progress in furthering sustainability at UWG, as is evidenced by UWG's significantly higher AASHE Stars score this time around. In addition to working on numerous engagement initiatives, such as the yearly Earth Week, the Center has managed to support sustainability workshops in pedagogy, apply for grants for post consumer waste composting, offering sustainability research incentives for students, actively taking part in the development of the campus master plan, developing a sustainability plan for the next three years, engaging the university in a town solarize campaign, creating a sustainability literacy module for instruction, and spearheading the creation of a sustainable investment committee, to name just a few.

The Director of Sustainability heads the Center for Sustainability and chairs the Sustainability Council. He/She is tasked with pursuing the UWG value of sustainability as well as assessing sustainability progress as is called for in UWG's strategic plan.
