There is no institution-wide stated preference to purchase EPEAT silver or higher products. However, as part of Western Policy 2.8 - Purchase of Materials and Services - there is reference to an environmentally sustainable campus when purchasing: “In carrying out these responsibilities, those responsible will have regard for the development of an environmentally sustainable campus while complying with all other University policies, financial controls and conflicts of interest”.

Western recently went through an RFP process to select a preferred vendor(s) for desktop and laptop technology. As part of this process, Western has awarded 3 vendors, and consequently all monitors and notebooks awarded as part of this contract are at a minimum Silver EPEAT level.
Furthermore, desktops purchased as part of this contract are at a Gold Level from Western’s tier 1 supplier. Desktops purchased from Western’s Tier 2 suppliers have not registered with the EPEAT program at this point, however Western anticipates Silver EPEAT rating or higher once this is completed.
