All major construction projects at Western, including renovations to existing buildings, pursue minimum design standards. To date, we have used LEED as the main source of benchmark information, and our most recent construction projects have targeted and/or achieved certification under this program.
Under LEED v2009, construction projects are to ensure recycling stations are integrated throughout the project and are designed to support campus waste diversion goals and recycling programs.
Western has historically performed well in terms of LEED MRc2 Construction Waste Management, consistently achieving at least 75% diversion rates, and MRc4 Recycle Content consistently achieving at least 20% recycled content.
In addition, projects target 100% diversion of landscape waste, by weight, from landfill as per Western’s Grounds Management Plan.
The City of London does not permit the collection of wood waste, renovation materials and construction/demolition waste. The City’s EnviroDepots accept wood waste and renovation materials for recycling. The material is taken to a local Recycle Depot for processing, where approximately 80% is made into usable products.
