Cache Valley Bike Challenge

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The university has been participating in the National Bike Challenge since 2013 and has won three out of the four years it has participated with 200+ cyclists participating. In an effort to involve the community, the university collaborated with the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (through the Cache Metropolitan Planning Organization), Bear River Health Departments, County Trails Cache, and local businesses and nonprofits, to create the Cache Valley Bike Challenge. The competition, which lasts May to September, has motivated increased cycling and advocacy for cycling, primarily on campus but also in the three counties served by the Bear River Health Department. The sixteen teams, four workplaces, and 13 communities that participated promoted camaraderie. The competition resulted in over 90,000 miles ridden, 32,000 lb CO2 saved, and $20,000 saved. Emissions are a particular priority in Cache Valley due to poor air quality.
