Does campus dining operations provide reusable containers for to-go food that are returned for cleaning and reuse?:
A brief description of the reusable to-go container program:
In April 2011, Dining Services began a re-usable to-go container pilot program. The program, titled “Green To-Go,” is meant to test a selected eco-clamshell as an alternative to the current Styrofoam containers. Students may purchase the containers at Owens Food Court with cash or flex (dining) dollars. The students own their particular container and may keep it. They are to be used similarly to food storage containers for this particular program (they may not be served into, but food is to be transferred into them from a plate). Students are responsible for washing their own container and transferring their food into the container.
Currently, Dining Service's Sustainability Coordinator is working to implement a reusable to go program where the containers could be dropped off in Dining Centers, washed by Dining Services and then swiped out by students again through their meal plan. There are significant logistical concerns that still need to be worked through but Virginia Tech Dining Services is very interested in eliminating foam from their waste stream.
