The EcoReps program is designed to provide student volunteers with the information and resources necessary to act as ambassadors between the Office of Sustainability and first-year students.

During the spring 2011 launch in South Residence Hall, Resident Advisers served as the first EcoReps on campus. At the conclusion of this pilot program, a minimum of four volunteer representatives were recruited from each of the first-year student residence halls.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Monthly programming centers around specific themes and strives to convey each issue in a fun and engaging fashion through interactive presentations, activities, and films. EcoReps also serve to inform students of ways they can become involved in campus sustainability initiatives. The program integrates existing programs and resources, including the Green Guide, aWakenings, and the Pro Humanitate Honor Roll. Representatives attend monthly meetings to learn about each month's programs and activities. They are asked to maintain a bulletin board on relevant information about each campus sustainability initiative.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Funding is provided through the Office of Sustainability and Residence Life and Housing. The Office of Sustainability employs two student interns to develop and oversee the implementation of the EcoReps program in first-year student residence halls. These student interns are responsible for training the EcoReps and developing content for monthly programs.

Residence Life and Housing is responsible for supplying prizes for regular competitions as well as program materials throughout the academic year.

Greeks Go Green

Each sorority on campus (and three fraternities) have Greeks Go Green representatives, who serve on a representative council. Representatives make Presi presentations at chapter meetings, host film screenings, and invite members to interactive activities like walking members to the weekly farmers market.

Chapter representatives serve in a volunteer capacity -- some organizations have multiple representatives and all have at least one. The representatives are approved by their executive boards so that they have the buy-in and support of organizational leadership.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Two Office of Sustainability interns serve as the network trainers. They prepare Presi presentations based on monthly themes that representatives present at chapter meetings. The Presis and their accompanying presentation notes are the catalyst for training and engagement.

The Office of Sustainability funds the internships for the two Greeks Go Green coordinators, as well as funding supplies for signs in chapter lounges, incentives for activities, film screening rights, and food for events.
