The university features both native and non-native species in landscaping. Approximately 85 percent of plantings are native species in all new landscaping. All plantings are within hardiness zone 7.

Though the flower beds are composed almost equally of perennial and annual blooms, these manicured areas comprise only a small portion of the university's land area. The large lawns around campus are not irrigated and much of the land is retained as woodlands or meadow for wildlife habitat.

When planning a new landscaping project, Landscaping Services makes sure to incorporate some native plants into the design, but this is not possible on all areas of campus where some micro-climates born of the semi-urban environment make the soil too hot and dry for native plants.
