E-waste is recycled through Synergy Recycling, LLC (http://www.synergyrecycling.com/index.php). Information Systems (IS) at Wake Forest ensures compliance with all health and safety commitments made by Synergy.
A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
E-waste that is generated from operations or faculty/staff is managed through the Information Systems (IS) Department. An on-line request for pick-up of the waste is necessary to notify Information Systems that e-waste is in need of proper disposal or recycling. Once a request has been submitted, IS will contact the owner/requester to schedule the pick-up. IS will collect the e-waste for proper shipment to the recycler.
Wake Forest also works with a local e-waste vendor and the company Greendisk to collect TechnoTrash at designated places around campus. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to place all e-waste (unusable/out of date cell phones, CDs, cords, and other electronics) in bins. When these bins are full, they are collected and shipped to Greendisk to be properly re-used, refurbished, or recycled.
Wake Forest University specifically chose Greendisk and the local e-waste recycler because we believe that these companies are responsible and reputable e-waste recyclers. More information about Greendisk is available at: http://greendisk.com/
NOTE: we are slowly phasing out Greendisk and moving towards a local e-waste recycler as this is more economical and also saves valuable resources (eliminating the need to ship out of state). E-waste processing is starting to catch on, and so more local opportunities are popping up to help us handle e-waste responsibly.
A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :
As stated above, Wake Forest University collects student-generated e-waste and recycles it through Greendisk and a local e-waste recycler. Please see the description above for detailed information about this program.
Additionally, Wake Forest students receive a standard issue laptop upon matriculation at the university. The laptops are replaced every two years. Upon exchange, used laptops are cleaned of all data and a new software package is uploaded. The restored computers are sold to the local public school system at a reduced price.
