A brief description of the institution’s LGBTQ-inclusive policies, programs and practices:

Preferred Name Policy
The Preferred Name policy at Washington University in St. Louis lets students at the Danforth Campus change their names in most university information systems without pursuing a legal name change. By allowing students to use a preferred name, the university hopes to give students an empowering, safe and nondiscriminatory university experience. Reasons for name changes may include transgender or gender nonconforming identities, international students or other students who wish to adopt an English language name, students known by names that are different from their legal names, or students who have popular names who wish to use a different one.

Washington University in St. Louis recognizes that this policy has a high impact on some trans* students’ safety and experience in their identities as they navigate campus. Further, this policy aims to build affirming environments where trans* students can consistently thrive with and among administrators, staff, faculty, and peers.

Please visit the Registrar’s page for more information about the Preferred Name policy. For more detailed information about how and where a student can input a preferred name, how and where preferred names will display, who has access to preferred names and names of record, and a detailed list of frequently asked questions, please visit the Preferred Name policy Student Information site.

Gender Inclusive Restrooms
Washington University in St. Louis is commited to providing access to safe and inclusive spaces for all people to use restrooms on campus. This includes, but is not limited to, trans* people, people with disabilities, people with children, and people with personal attendants. The University has a policy that all new and significantly renovated campus buildings will have at least one gender inclusive restroom. Therefore, single-use locking gender inclusive restrooms are provided in many academic, administrative, and residential buildings. Please see the Danforth Campus map of gender inclusive restrooms for more details.

Gender Inclusive Housing
Washington University strives to provide comfortable, diverse, and safe housing options for all students living in university housing. As of the Fall of 2015, gender inclusive housing is possible for all first time and returning students in any of the university housing options on the South 40, Northside, and off-campus university housing options. This includes modern and traditional residential colleges, suites, and multiple-occupancy rooms. For more information about gender inclusive housing, please visit the Residential Life website.
