The Committee on Diversity and Community (CDC), formerly the Commission on Campus Race Relations (CCRR), focuses on issues of diversity and community on campus and makes recommendations on both curricular and extracurricular matters with the intention of promoting better understanding between and among groups on campus. The Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity solicits nominations and self-nominations from the campus as a whole and through the regular College Council and Faculty Steering Committee procedures for selection of faculty, staff, and students to committees and annually appoints the Committee Chair and members. The three ex officio members are the Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity, the Associate Dean for Diversity, and an officer of the College Council.

The mission of the Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity at Williams College is to catalyze critical thinking and inclusive engagement.

We hold all members of the College community responsible and accountable as contributors to an intellectual environment where all can live, learn, and thrive.

With vigilance and persistence, we will strengthen the College’s commitment to inclusion by ensuring that diversity initiatives are maintained, supported, and celebrated.

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:

The Vice President for Institutional Diversity, who will report to the President and be a member of the College's Senior Staff, will lead the development and implementation of College policies related to diversity; work with departments and offices on the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds; and serve as a key institutional voice on diversity issues with campus and alumni constituencies, the Board of Trustees, media, community organizations, and other groups.

Williams works on diversity issues throughout the College. This position will for the first time centralize those efforts at the top of the organization. It evolves from the current position of Assistant to the President for Affirmative Action and Government Relations.

As an essential part of its mission, Williams is committed to developing itself as a community of learning in which all members have equal opportunities to thrive regardless of their race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression, socio-economic status, religion, political beliefs, or disability status.

As a member of Senior Staff, the (Vice President or Assistant to the President) will also be among the group of top administrators who work most closely with the President in setting goals for the College and in establishing and managing the processes by which those goals are met.
