Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Carbon Charge

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

The Yale Carbon Charge assesses a fee of $40/metric tonne of carbon dioxide emissions resulting from building operations. The charge is assessed on the 26 administrative Planning Units that have responsibility for buildings at Yale, out of approximately 50 total Planning Units at the University. The charge currently covers 259 Yale buildings out of approximately 500 buildings associated with Yale.

The Carbon Charge engages certain employees directly each month. The Carbon Charge staff send monthly building energy reports to the Lead Administrator, Operations Manager and Facilities Superintendent for each building. These employees can and sometimes do pass on relevant portions of the energy report, most importantly the graphical elements, to Deans, other staff, and to students.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Yale is reducing total building energy consumption despite growth in the square footage of occupied space. The carbon charge went live across most of Yale campus at the beginning of Fiscal Year 2018. As of March, Fiscal Year 2018 energy consumption in the 259 Yale buildings participating in the carbon charge was 6% lower than average over the Fiscal Years 2011-2015. While it is too early to estimate the degree of impact with confidence, we hope the carbon charge incentive is driving energy conservation in concert with infrastructure upgrades and efficiency improvements.
