Actionable Sustainability Research Grant Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

In the spring 2017 semester the Office of Sustainability teamed up with the Yale Institute of Biospheric Studies (YIBS) and the Center for Business and Environment (CBEY) to issue a broad call for student research proposals to support the Yale Sustainability Plan. Funding was available to support actionable research by individual students or teams of undergraduate, graduate, professional, and doctoral students with innovative ideas for sustainability projects. Multidisciplinary proposals were especially encouraged, and each projected included a faculty advisor, strategies for measuring success, reporting, and communications.

This process netted four winning projects: a study of how municipalities are transitioning to clean energy in Germany (Yale College), a design for a heat-absorbing green wall on a campus building (School of Architecture), an initiative to eliminate disposable dishware for catered events (School of Public Health), and the redesign of a jet engine to be 70% more efficient (School of Management).
