The name of the campaign (1st campaign):
Res Race to Zero

A brief description of the campaign (1st campaign):

The Res Race to Zero is a competition that involves nine undergraduate residence buildings. The on-campus residents work together to reduce their building’s carbon footprint. Environmental Ambassadors in each residence are tasked with educating their peers on sustainable practices to achieve lower energy consumption. The residence that shows the largest net decrease in consumption I awarded a $2000 prize which is reinvested in sustainability. The Res Race to Zero complements York’s 5-year Energy management plan which includes reducing consumption by 25%. The campaign reinforces sustainable behavior and practices that are critical for reducing the University’s carbon footprint.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (1st campaign):

The competition compares per capita energy consumption over the four week competition period to an earlier baseline period of 28 days. The Res Race to Zero that took place during March of 2014 showed that the average cumulative decrease in energy consumption per capita was 0.795 kWh. The winning residence showed a cumulative decrease of 3.466 kWh per capita over the month of competition.

Green Office program

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The Green Office program is designed to engage faculty, staff and students (with office space) in incorporating a wide variety of sustainable practices into the day to day operations of work spaces across the University. The program focuses on five key areas- Waste, Energy, Transportation, Purchasing, and Change. Program participants can download the Green Office checklist that contains tips and resources on sustainable options in the day to day running of your office. Offices that achieve the minimum score or higher on the checklist, are given either a green, gold or platinum rating. The Green Office program is promoted on the front page of the Sustainability@YorkU webpage.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The Green Office program is an ongoing project. Since its creation The University has had 19 on-campus offices achieve a green rating or higher. Overall, the offices that participate in the program make improvements in the sustainability of their day to day operations.
