A brief description of the sustainable building operations and maintenance program and/or a list or sample of buildings covered:

York does not have any certification that it uses to manage its building and operations. A number of sustainability maintenance and operations practices have been adopted, which satisfy basic requirements of this credit. The Campus Services and business Operations website has various plans and guidelines that have been implemented to improve everyday operations and maintenance of the campus. This includes the Energy Management Plan, as well as the Green Cleaning Initiative. New building developments are examined from the standpoint of maximizing building and operational sustainability, carefully examining the viability for fixed guidelines, such as, but not limited to, LEED Certification. Two of York’s most recent buildings achieved LEED Silver certification. As well, the recent expansion to the Ignat Kaneff building received LEED CI silver status. The grounds and custodial staff at York have implemented the following, ongoing sustainability practices in daily operations across all buildings on campus:
-230 residence laundry machines replaced with high efficiency units
-Composting initiatives implemented in Passy apartments and suite style residences
-Low flow washroom fixtures with low flow urinals and showers (in residence)
-All residence faucets have been equipped with aerators
-Green Cleaning Product Guidelines implemented across all buildings.
-Elements of green products include recycled paper, hand dryers
-Light fixtures have been replaced with higher efficiency florescent lights
-HVAC Modifications: Improve the provision of heating, ventilation and cooling within buildings
including the recovery of waste energy
-Residence Environmental Ambassadors encourage energy and waste reduction for students living on campus

Many buildings also contain offices that are certified by York Sustainability’s Green Office Program. The Offices that are certified by the Green Office Program use practices that reduce energy consumption and mitigate waste.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:

Initiatives such as the Green Cleaning Initiative are campus wide. Compliance is ensured through continuous procurement of green cleaning products.
