In cooperation with the recommendations of the President’s Sustainability Council, many departments and operational units at the university have worked together to make York a leading sustainable institution. Recent accomplishments include:
- Names as one of Canada’s Green Employers in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
- An increase to over 80% of the York University community using alternative transit when commuting to campus.
-Creation of President’s Sustainability Awards that recognize staff for their contributions to sustainability at York.
-Increasing waste diversion rate to over 65%
-Introduction of New Farmers market during the 2013/2014 academic year

The President's Sustainability Council (PSC) is an advisory body to the President with responsibility for providing input and recommendations on how to advance York University’s sustainability initiatives, projects, and practices and to provide oversight of the required actions from approved ecommendations. It is also a mechanism through which to support and enable York students, faculty and staff to participate meaningfully in the planning and implementation of York University’s sustainability policies, initiatives, projects and practices. It serves to foster the integration of knowledge and issues about sustainability into research, education and application.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

Environmental Design and Sustainability unit is responsible for the planning, development and management of university infrastructure relative to the campus built, natural and human environments ensuring environmental, operational, social, safety and aesthetic objectives of the University are met. This includes design and sustainability considerations for over 500 acres of land and woodlots, containing over 96 multi-use buildings, used by approximately 60,000 students, faculty and staff.

The Office of the President hosts York’s full-time sustainability coordinator position. The office is supplemented by two work-study sustainability assistants during the fall and winter academic sessions, and one work-study sustainability assistant during the summer.

A brief description of each sustainability officer position:

Director, Campus Planning and Development: Responsible for the strategic planning, development and management of York's physical infrastructure relative to the campus built, natural and human environments, ensuring the University's environmental, operational, social, safety and aesthetic objectives are met. This includes design and sustainability considerations for over 500 acres of land and woodlots, containing over 96 multi-use buildings, used by approximately 60,000 students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for identifying and supporting sustainability projects that are outlined in the PSC Annual Reports, advancing recommendations on sustainability, and engaging the York community on sustainability initiatives through events, outreach and social media.
