IN 24: Natural Wastewater Systems – version 2.2
Frequently Asked Questions
Should stormwater treatment be calculated into this credit?
This credit focuses on the treatment and management of wastewater, which includes blackwater (effluent containing contaminants), and greywater (effluent that does not contain contaminants). Stormwater that is discharged through conventional sewer infrastructure should be included as wastewater to the extent feasible.
- Emory University – Great website documentation. The WaterHub is an award-winning natural wastewater system that also provides educational opportunities for the campus community.
Common Issues Identified During Review
- Intent of this credit is to recognize institutions that use natural wastewater systems to treat and manage at least 10 percent of its wastewater through on-site infiltration and/or re-use. Appropriate strategies include constructed treatment wetlands, Living Machines, and other technologies that treat wastewater by mimicking the biological, chemical and physical processes occurring in natural wetlands. This credit is about treating wastewater, not stormwater filtration and treatment (stormwater initiatives are captured under OP 23).
