Cal State LA's Americorp Civic Action Fellows program has deployed Civic Action Fellows to work with TreePeople for two consecutive years and with more years to come. Civic Action Fellows are Americorp funded and serve 450 hours with their host agency to support projects that help the agency develop its capacity and address key issues such as K-12 education, climate justice, or food insecurity. Fellows are upper-division level Cal State LA students. Fellows have led projects with TreePeople including developing and leading tree planting programs in underserved communities and creating educational curriculum regarding the environment and sustainability issues.

Cal State LA partnered with the Southeast Los Angeles Collaborative (SELA) to launch the Americorps Civic Action Fellows in southeast Los Angeles, a historically challenged, economically deprived, and underserved corridor of cities and communities that parallel the 710 freeway.The SELA Collaborative works together to address key issues such as economic disparity and environmental justice. Cal State LA assigned two fellows to the SELA collaborative to assist with building the capacity of the agencies to address priority issues. In 2020, energies were focused on helping communities thrive during the pandemic. Fellows receive a total stipend of up to $10,000 for 450 hours of service. One Fellow was immediately hired by the SELA Collaborative for a full time position upon the conclusion of his fellowship.

Cal State LA's Asian American Studies program partners with the Alhambra Unified School District to collaborate on the creation and sustainability of community gardens on underserved school sites. Students from our program are involved in all stages of building and sustaining the gardens in partnership with the schools. The Center for Engagement, Service & the PUblic Good helps to support the community garden program by providing mini-grants to faculty for gardening supplies and materials.
