The Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition (SEMIS) facilitates school-community partnerships to develop students as citizen-stewards of healthy ecological-social systems. One of the core elements of our mission is coalition building—facilitating connections that unite educators, activists, organizations, practitioners, community members and youth who are dedicated to transforming education and protecting the future of our human and natural commons. Our work is empowered when we learn from each other and grow from a place of shared energy and insight. Community partners include Ann Arbor Public Schools, the James and Grace Lee Boggs School (Detroit), Detroit Public Schools Community District, Early College Alliance (Ypsilanti), John Paul II Elementary Catholic School (Lincoln Park), Summers-Knoll School (Ann Arbor) and Ypsilanti Community Schools.

The Family Empowerment Program (FEP) housed at Eastern Michigan University and coordinated by on-site social workers is a key point for social, health and economic access, education support and community navigation for families living in all Ypsilanti Housing Commission (YHC) communities. Through partnerships and programming, the FEP has developed a social services program whose purpose is to substantially improve the educational, health, and economic outcomes for all 568 individuals currently living in YHC communities.
