A brief description of any internal sustainability professional development and training opportunities that the institution makes available to non-academic staff:

The 75-100 faculty and staff who participate in the CSA Rebate Program are required to attend two food education events, which consist of cooking and nutrition classes. They also receive a bi-weekly newsletter with information about local producers, nutrition information, and recipes.

Additionally, all staff receive every-other-month sustainability updates during all-staff meetings about a variety of sustainability topics. These may not qualify as formal trainings because they are only 15 minutes long.

For close to a decade, Luther has sponsored an annual Staff Day for employees to take half a day to enrich themselves and receive a free lunch. Most years there are a variety of sustainability related tracks offered, including things like cooking classes, gardening classes and renewable energy tours. Because of COVID, this was paused after the last class in October, 2019. Conversations are underway about resuming this, possibly with a service project orientation.

Luther college requires all new staff to take sexual harassment training, and thereafter every three years. Required online bias and diversity training was completed by all staff in Spring, 2021.

A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

Luther College provides financial support to staff attending the AASHE conference as well as the bi-annual conference of UMACS (Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability). Luther also supports staff attending sustainability offerings through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). In addition, individuals can request support when attending conferences or workshops that relate to sustainability from any other source. This is open to any faculty and staff at Luther.

These reviews are based on job descriptions and include both a self-evaluation and an evaluation by the supervisor. All employees of the Center for Sustainable Communities as well as select staff in Facilities Management have sustainability included in their job descriptions. These staff have sustainability included in their annual reviews as described above.
