Human Rights Institute

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

The San José State University Human Rights Institute specializes in human rights research, journalism, programming, and policy design. HRI students and faculty study pressing social problems and work with community organizations, stakeholders, and policy makers to inform and design solutions according to relevant scholarship, human rights law, and international best practices.

Since 2020, HRI publishes the Silicon Valley Pain Index [SVPI]. The purposes of the report are to: (1) Provide an efficient, easily digestible, statistical overview of structured inequalities to inform policy and practice in “Silicon Valley”; (2) Serve as a measure of Santa Clara County’s performance as a “human rights county”, which it declared in 2018 in accordance with the International Bill of Human Rights; and (3) Inspire collaborations between scholars, students, stakeholders, communities, and policy makers to address inequality and achieve greater human rights practice.

Sustainability In Curriculum Development Workshop

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Sustainability Curriculum Development Workshop is offered every semester since 2020 to share resources, best practices and examples on how to incorporate sustainability into existing courses. Since its inception, the workshop has launched over 80 new or revamped courses throughout all colleges that incorporate sustainability into its learning outcomes.

Moss Landing Marine Laboratories

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

Since its inception in the 1960s, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) has made waves in the world of marine science. MLML is part of San José State University’s College of Science, and faculty from MLML and other parts of the college tackle climate change in marine systems from a variety of angles and areas, from the West Coast to Antarctica.

“The mission of MLML is to provision the marine scientists of the future. This means that undergraduate and graduate students are provided with unparalleled access to faculty advisors and teachers, research facilities, and an incredible local marine environment. Our primary goal is to provide students with the necessary skills and training to succeed in academia, governmental agencies, conservation, and management to serve societal needs involving marine issues.”
