535 Acres

A brief description of the IPM plan(s) :

The plan adheres to a four tiered IPM plan in STARS. Thresholds are set for each area depending on its location, the time of year and the type of pest. For example, athletic fields would have a different threshold than other areas due to playability issues and NCAA standards. Also, if a frost is imminent, treatment may not be applied. When the grounds staff observes evidence of pest infestation, they contact the head of grounds who inspects and identifies the type of bug and determine the best course of treatment. The use of pesticides and herbicides has been greatly reduced and are used only as a last resort in treatment. Prevention is achieved through three strategies. First, proper maintenance and management practices, such as keeping areas mowed and aerated, are employed. Second, local mulch is preferred for use the grounds to prevent the spread of invasive species. If an infestation occurs, the source of the mulch used in that area is investigated. Third, preference is given to plant species that are resistant to fungus and pests.
