A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:
Three research institute directors/faculty members from different departments who conduct research, adapted the following definition of sustainability research from the National Science Foundation (NSF): "Environmental sciences (terrestrial and extraterrestrial) are, with the exception of oceanography, concerned with the gross nonbiological properties of the areas of the solar system that directly or indirectly affect human survival and welfare." This definition from NSF, inclusive of the phrase "directly or indirectly affect human survival and welfare", was considered, broadly interpreted, and adopted by CU researchers Alan Townsend (ENVS chair), James White (INSTARR director), and Koni Stephan (CIRES director) to be the definitional framework by which to assay sustainability research conducted at CU.

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
A CU researcher reviewed all CU research categorized via the NSF definition using the Web of Science database, a Web of Science database (copyright Thomson Reuters). Publications by CU faculty were identified and summarized(number of publications, number of citations, average citations per article).
The analysis also reviewed all research publications from peer universities. The results identified CU as the nation's top NSF research university in geosciences & environmental sustainability in terms of numbers of papers published--and second in terms of citations per paper.
