Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Hanley Sustainability Institute

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

The University of Dayton founded the Hanley Sustainability Institute out of the largest single monetary gift in UD’s history. From the institute's founding, it's purpose has been to support sustainability education across disciplines and establish the university as a national leader for innovation in sustainability education. Within its first year, HSI funded three scholars-in-residence and hosted two innovative sustainability conferences to promote sustainability within the curriculum, within the investment community, and across research disciplines. Also within the first two years, HSI
• Hosted and published proceedings on the web from the Divest/Invest conference (Acting on Pope Francis’ call: Divestment and Investment in Care for Our Common Home, November 5-7, 2015).
• Hosted an interdisciplinary conference, “Everything is Connected”, focused on developing an undergraduate textbook teaching Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology (March 3-4, 2016).

Through deepening existing partnerships and developing many new partnerships on and off campus, the Hanley Sustainability Institute continues to work with the University and Dayton communities to make progress towards our goal of a more sustainable campus and community and becoming a leader in sustainability education. In 2019, the University added sustainability undergraduate degrees to go along with the existing sustainability minor and graduate certificate.

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Solar Prairie

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

Installed in 2018, a 700kW solar array contributes to the university's supply of renewable energy. More importantly, located on campus in a highly visible location, the solar array makes a statement of the university's commitment to renewable energy and serves as a model in the community of the possibility of solar in the region. In addition, the solar array installation included the establishment of a 6.5-acre solar prairie. The solar prairie at Curran Place serves as a hands-on laboratory and studio space for students honing skills in renewable energy, engineering, environmental biology, art, and other disciplines. It also visibly demonstrates UD's commitment to caring for our common home. With over 80 plant species native to Ohio, the prairie provides important habitat for pollinators while promoting efficient renewable energy generation from the solar panels.
