A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
The majority of students live on The University of Rochester campus for their entire undergraduate career. When you live on campus there is no need to have a car because the buses can take you to most places in Rochester, including grocery stores, the mall, and many restaurants. This makes walking the quickest and easiest mode of transportation for the majority of students. The other 3% of students that drive to school park their car in a lot for a day and walk to campus and to all of their classes. Once they arrive on campus they leave their cars in the lot all day and walk everywhere just like the residential students.
We assumed that all students living in on-campus housing use sustainable commuting options as their primary mode of transportation, and based this on how many commuter passes were sold.
