The University of Pittsburgh engages in sustainability-focused and related public policy advocacy, support, and partnership at the international level in a variety of means highlighted below.

TRANSLANTIC PERSPECTIVES ON ENERGY AND CITIES: As part of the European Studies Center’s Transatlantic Perspectives on Energy and Cities (TPEC) grant, Pitt hosted a workshop on Cap and Trade in the EU and US; its goal was to produce policy recommendations. Dr. Michael Aklin from Political Science was the lead facilitator. In addition, the TPEC grant has also resulted in conferences and workshops at Newcastle University in the UK about unconventional gas extraction and has featured both scholars and policymakers/practitioners to influence public policy on the topic.

PITT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL ENGAGEMENT: The University of Pittsburgh became a founding university member of U.S. Sustainable Development Solutions Network in 2018, working with institutions nationally and internationally on achieving the global sustainable development goals (SDGs), will require many policy collaborations.

In a 2019 forum during the 74th United Nations General Assembly, University of Pittsburgh Provost Ann Cudd was on an SDG-focused panel with Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto and leaders from Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, and the Pittsburgh Foundation. The panel highlighted regional accomplishments to advance the SDGs for a more peaceful, prosperous planet with just and inclusive societies to showcase the best of American leadership and innovation to achieve the SDGs.

UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES – The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for International Studies (UCIS) leads Pitt’s comprehensive international engagement process by engaging both internal stakeholders (including deans and other administrators and faculty, staff, and students across all five campuses) and external stakeholders (including institutional partners, alumni around the world, community leaders, prospective students and their parents, and others in the U.S. and abroad). Given global concerns, sustainability is at the heart and related to several of UCIS’s engagements (several of which are related to public policy), with several key highlights below.

PITT GLOBAL STUDIES CENTER: Pitt’s Global Studies Center (GSC) promotes critical thinking and practical engagement with the world through the interdisciplinary study of globalization -- of transnational processes and the connections, divisions, disruptions, inequalities, and productive possibilities these processes engender across time and space. Pitt’s GSC fosters innovative research, rigorous study, and thoughtful practice through collaborations with staff, students, faculty, and community partners locally and around the world, creating diverse and inclusive spaces for intellectual growth and debate. Current research thrusts (which inform public policy engagement) include: Global Loss in the Anthropocene; Global Migrations; Cities in Transformation (with focus on culture, economics, sustainability, and health); and Global Health.

PITT EUROPEAN STUDIES CENTER: Pitt’s European Studies Center (ESC) coordinates and develops scholarship, teaching, and community events related to Europe and the European Union. The ESC also supports the development of new courses, sponsors lectures, symposia, and conferences with international participants, offers faculty and graduate student grants, and provides an intellectual community for students and faculty studying all aspects of contemporary and historical Europe and the European Union (including an emphasis on sustainability-focused and related public policy, given the significant sustainability efforts in Europe).
