Does the institution advocate for public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability at the municipal/local level?:
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
Locally, we have met and advocated for partnerships between the University and city for policy. In November 2018, we formed a climate resiliency task force with a select group of university and community leaders. This task force meets regularly. In February 2020, the task force finalized a climate resiliency plan to build a more resilient community. The sustainability department partnered with the Rotary club, Spearfish City and a non-profit organization on developing a native pollinator garden. The Bike club collaborated with the city of Spearfish to install bike repair stations along the city bike path. At the direction of the university administration, we purchased two electric vehicle charging stations for university staff and student as well as community members to use free of charge.

BHSU hosts and encourages participation from students, faculty, and staff at cracker-barrel discussions with our state representatives. University members advocated for the Library renovation and increased solar capability.

BHSU participates in public policy advocacy through our membership to member organizations such as AASHE, the American College and University President's Climate Commitment, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and APPA.
