A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted (e.g. in sustainability plans and policies or in the context of other reporting obligations):
The launching and ongoing development of “The APP”, or the Accident Prevention Program has brought new and different trainings for management and staff, with the plan of creating a robust safety culture as well as the basis for continuous improvement.
Lean Safety Gemba was brought to the campus first in May 2017. The primary audience were those employees working in the custodial field, managers, supervisors and leads. Custodians had the highest rate of injuries, therefore this was the focus. This training was then taken statewide with grant funding, also with the focus on custodians. It was very well received by all. The training came back to our campus in March 2019 for all the trades and grounds workers. The training develops the skill of engaging employees while the do the work and looking for opportunities to make the task safer and easier. Getting employees involved gives them some sense of power, that what they say matters and can make a difference.
The Sprain Strain Workshops were introduced in May 2018, then came back in October 2018, and again in March 2019. These workshops develop body and ergonomic awareness for activities of daily living, in the office, and specific workplace activities. So far we have had Phases 1, 2, & 3. Phases 2 delves into the specifics of the job including the tools used daily; Phase 3 the instructor goes out into the field and works with small groups while doing their jobs.
