Within the updated Procurement Policy a new section on Sustainable Purchases. This policy was established in January 2009 and updated in April 2014 and is undergoing another revision currently. The Sustainable Purchases section reads:
Preference should be given to products and services that conserve natural resources and protect the environment to the extent practicable and economically feasible. Purchase of products that are ENERGY STAR certified in all areas for which such ratings exist is required.

LCCA is used on new construction and major renovations. CWRU facilities and campus planning works with engineering and design contractors to do an energy model and BTU and cost budget for building systems or when evaluating system options. The LCCA is used in addition to first cost evaluations.

Green building new construction and renovation standards are available online and required to be used by vendors. They specify project goals and certain products that need specified like water saving bathroom fixtures and water bottle filling stations.

CWRU specifically chose Bon Appetite because of their sustainability corporate mandates. Other preferred catering vendors also are required to attend a sustainability training workshop and to meet certain basic sustainability standards outlined in their contract. Page three of the preferred vendor catering agreement (item 14) encourages vendors to purchase local food and use green event practices.

The CWRU Supplier Diversity Initiative Council's mission is to make doing business with CWRU more accessible to minority populations.
