Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The Registrar's Office provided a spreadsheet with an inventory of all courses offered in the last three years.
Individually-directed courses (internship, thesis, independent study, practicum) and courses that are strictly practice-oriented (musical performance, theater) and clinical courses were excluded based on their coding as per the STARS Technical Manual guidelines for sampling.
Sustainability courses were identified through two strategies. Course descriptions were reviewed by a student intern in the Office of Sustainability using a series of keywords to narrow the selection.
A survey was then distributed to all faculty requesting that they self-identify sustainability courses and courses that include sustainability using the definitions outlined in G. Standards and Terms.
The following definitions were provided to faculty in the survey:
Sustainability-focused courses include:
- Courses with a primary and explicit focus on sustainability (e.g., Introduction to Sustainability)
- Courses with a primary and explicit focus on the application of sustainability within a field (e.g., Sustainable Agriculture)
- Courses with a primary and explicit focus on understanding or solving a major sustainability challenge (e.g., Climate Change Science)
Sustainability-related courses are primarily focused on topics other than sustainability, but:
- Incorporate a unit or module on the interdependence of ecological and social/economic systems or a sustainability challenge (see bit.ly/sustkey for example keywords),
- Include one or more sustainability-focused activities, OR
- Integrate sustainability issues and concepts throughout the course.
The attached inventory includes a column labeled F/P where F denotes Full sustainability courses and P denotes Partial sustainability courses which correspond to sustainability-focused courses and sustainability-related courses respectively, as outlined above.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
