A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:
Dickinson is a residential college. Approximately 94% our students (studying at the Carlisle campus, not abroad) live on campus in Dickinson-owned residential spaces and walk, bicycle, or skateboard as their primary method of transportation on campus. Another 5% live very near campus in properties that are not college-owned. These students also walk, bicycle or skateboard to campus because of proximity and parking on our small campus. The remaining 1% of students (27 students in 2017-18) commute to the college with only the driver in the vehicle.
Total on-campus (taking courses at Dickinson main campus) students were determined by using total headcount of on-campus matriculates. This includes all those living in college-owned property (94%) plus those renting from private individuals (5%).

Dickinson has already made great progress in the following areas of sustainable transportation including becoming a Bicycle Friendly University (silver) and providing a community a culture where walking, biking and skateboarding are the norm for getting around our residential campus.
