The Escouades DD (SD Squad) is a team of students that are hired at the beginning of each semester to support HEC Montréal’s sustainability outreach activities aimed at its students. The members of the Escouades come from various undergraduate or graduated programs, and their mission is to reach other students to educate them on sustainability initiatives, programs, and curriculum. Hired by the Sustainability Office and the Infrastructure Office, the members of the SD Squad are provided with a budget to conduct sustainability outreach and engagement activities. The budget includes a compensation for their time and funding for materials required for these activities. The SD Squad members also have the responsibility to design, in collaboration with the Sustainability Office staff, outreach activities and back-to-school programming. For example, in fall 2020, the Squad members created and recorded digital content, such as videos and podcasts, that were available on streaming platforms, such as Spotify or Apple Music, to reach and educate their peers at a distance,. . The Squad also plays an active role during various events organized at the school through the year, helping to promote and showcase SD initiatives.
In 2019-20, over 12 months, 8 different students were part of the squad, and worked a total of 467 hours combined (average of 57.6 hours/year/member)

Students looking for a job, exploring SD career perspectives and looking to build their sustainability network – By participating to organize two career fairs per year, the SD and the social impact career fairs.
Students enrolled in specific programs - presence during welcome and orientation sessions to inform students enrolled in our different programs about HEC Montréal’s sustainability strategy and initiatives, as well as opportunities to get involved
Student community online – information on key issues of interest for students through a podcast series and different videos, support to dissemination of student-committee-led initiatives across campus, among others
Students, staff and visitors during the gradual release of the COVID19 lockdown measures - providing in-person guidance on how to keep sustainable living habits while also respecting the sanitary measures

Hectare Urbain, HEC’s flagship urban agriculture initiative, supports its volunteers and provides them with ressources to carry out this project and promote it in our community. Participating students are volunteers, but are provided with an operations budget, material, human resources, and training and development opportunities. They are also coached by staff volunteers and more experienced student volunteers. Student volunteers can leverage these resources and knowledge to create activities and events promoting sustainable food systems, a healthy lifestyle, resilient ecosystems and permaculture principles to the entire student body. Due to the Covid-19, peer-to-peer activities were reviewed to adapt to a digital world. In 2020, the SD Squad developed video materials in collaboration with HU volunteers to promote the project, HU volunteers participated in a virtual urban agriculture festival (Cultiver Montréal), worked on a partnership with Université de Montréal to create a First Nations Garden of the celebrating indigenous people culture and knowledge, and are participating into a student’s academic project to review the long-term objectives, with assistance of their peers enrolled in HEC’s Sustainable Development Management course.

Main target audiences are : 1) students interested in developing hands-on experience in ecosystem management, beekeeping, permaculture gardening and food resilience; 2) students interested in giving back to the community through a school pairing program that allows them to share their knowledge with younger students from elementary and secondary schools.
