AASHE is the leading association for the advancement of sustainability in higher education. We serve a full range of higher education faculty, administrators, staff and students who are change agents and drivers of sustainability innovation. Established in 2005, AASHE is comprised of over 900 members across 48 U.S. states, 1 U.S. Territory, 9 Canadian provinces and 20 countries.

The College of Business introduced the Responsible Leadership Initiative in Fall 2017, after becoming an advanced signatory to Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and an associate member of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) in Spring 2017. Both organizations are supported by AACSB, our international accrediting body, which advocates that colleges and schools of business teach business as a force for good throughout the world.

CONCRETE POETRY: CELEBRATING THE CUYAHOGA RIVER THROUGH POETRY AND DESIGN WITH WORKS THAT APPEAR ON CONCRETE WHEN WET
How do we connect to the Cuyahoga River? The flowing water touches our emotions, our communities, our environment and our history. In this 50th anniversary year of the last Cuyahoga River fire, the Concrete Poetry project invites us to reconsider and reconnect to the river and its legacy. The 1969 fire occurred at a pivotal time and helped spark the environmental movement leading to protective legislation and the sustainability movement today.
Kent State’s Office of Sustainability convened partners to create the designs. The poems are from the Wick Poetry Center’s Cuyahoga River Stanzas. The designs are from Aoife Mooney and Sanda Katila’s typography students in the School of Visual Communication and Design. Additional designs share facts about the watershed. The images that appear on the ground are meant to bring a smile, give us pause or educate.
This project is a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability, the School of Visual Communication and Design and the Wick Poetry Center. Thank you to TechStyleLab for providing the stencils for the concrete designs. Designs are installed through the Kent State University Campus and downtown Kent, Ohio. Check back as more designs are installed.

Kent State University – The University’s Office of Sustainability manages and plans sustainability efforts with the strategic goal of meeting present needs without compromising future generations. University energy efficiency retrofits include energy controls, electronic metering and lighting and HVAC improvements, resulting in $1.8 million savings. Kent States’ Field House solar panels generate 500,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year. Storm water management includes green roofs, constructed wetlands, permeable pavers, conservation easements, retention/detention ponds, rain gardens, and vernal and ephemeral pools. KSU is recognized for its focus on environmentally friendly transportation with a free bus system and Flashfleet bike sharing system. The KSU Airport was one of 20 airports nationwide selected by the FAA for funding sustainability projects. New building construction must meet LEED standards and realize an average of 40 percent water savings and 40 percent energy savings. Kent’s landfill diversion rate has increased to 36 percent in 2016 in four years.
