When developing the sustainability literacy assessment, it was decided that it would be valuable to have a baseline of interest in sustainability, and that this survey would be an opportunity to determine knowledge of campus sustainability initiatives as well as individuals' sustainability behaviors and/or beliefs. Therefore we added a baseline question and listed campus sustainability resources/programs and basic sustainability behaviors that we educate about. The first survey was given in 2015 and has been revised slightly until it's final version was created in 2018.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:
Sustainability staff set up outside the cafeteria for a week during meal times. All students were asked to participate in the survey. This location and timing plus the in-person request, provides the best chance for a representative sample of campus to participate. The survey was a single sheet of paper that students filled out in person at the table (not taken away and turned in later).
A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:
Results show that most students are interested in sustainability issues (I have a passion for sustainability -16%; I have considerable interest in sustainability - 54%). Only 1% stated that they have little interest in sustainability and no one indicated that they have no interest in sustainability. Of the 4 sustainability behaviors the survey asked about, the majority of students previously knew about these general behaviors, but some more than others; the spread was 51-96%. Of the 4 sustainability programs listed, more than 55-60% of students responded that they didn't know 3 of them existed. Only one was known, but only by 51% of respondents. This provided great feedback on the need to tell our story more often.
