Longitudinally to measure change over time

A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:

Until July 2021, the Sustainability Literacy Assessment (see STARS credit AC-6 ) was conducted each year: At the start of the academic year for incoming students and at the end of the academic year for graduating students. The questionnaire measured mostly knowledge, but also attitudes, behavior and values about sustainability.

Since spring 2022, we conduct a campus-wide “Campus Sustainability Culture” survey of ALL SU campus members (undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff). We obtained a list of ALL campus members from SU's Institutional Research and sent out a Qualtrics survey to all. In other words: it was directly, not by "representative sample. We conduct this survey every other year from the same campus population (all students and all employees). The 2nd Campus sustainability culture survey will be conducted in Spring or Fall 2024.

CEJS staff and students in partnership with a professor from the Albers School of Business and Economics developed the survey by:
• Using questions from the past Sustainability Literacy Assessment (see AC 6).
• Comparing sustainability culture surveys from other schools: A CEJS student researched sustainability culture assessments from other colleges/universities using the STARS benchmarking tool and content display features.
• Including questions that are related to SU’s sustainability goals and to initiatives that are being considered by university departments so that we could assess opinions and feedback about potential future sustainability practices and programs.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

The survey was sent to 8012 campus members. 671 campus members responded; that is 8%.
Of the total university population (8012 at the time of the survey, April-May 2022): 28% of all staff, 15% of all faculty, 5% of all undergraduates, and 6% of all graduate students responded to the survey.
