Drive Less Connect : SOU

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Southern Oregon University partnered with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) to host Drive Less Connect: SOU, an individualized marketing (IM) campaign to help students walk, bike, take transit, and carpool for their daily trips. The campus-based approach included pre- and post-program surveys, customized transportation information, campus events, and partnerships with campus and community groups. The primary goal of the Drive Less Connect: SOU program was to reduce the drive-alone mode share among students for all trips. Pre- and post-program surveys were used to evaluate behavior change that occurred during the project. Program surveys indicated a reduction in students’ drive-alone trips after the program’s completion. Drive Less Connect: SOU helped reduce drive-alone trips by 3.9%, and increased carpool and public transit trips by 7.0% and 1.2%, respectively. Bicycling, walking, and skateboarding trips decreased by small amounts (1.3%, 2.9%, and 0.1%, respectively). A total of 641,781 student vehicle miles were saved annually due to the reduction of drive-alone trips.
