Staff Development and Professional Services (SDPS) fosters and supports learning and performance by providing innovative, high-quality programs, resources and services. SD&PS offer staff a wide array of courses, programs and certificate series on nearly 300 topics, as well as confidential career counseling, a resource library, online toolkits and management consultation regarding learning and performance support.

UC Davis has a library of e-learning covering many subjects. There are four courses available related to green business, five courses related to green IT, one employee orientation course that addresses sustainability and one course related to green driving.

UC Davis licenses an e-book library (provided by Skillsoft). This library has over 1,500 books that address sustainability. All of these resources are available to all UC Davis employees.

UC Davis Extension professional and continuing education courses are accessible to all UC Davis staff. A number of sustainability-related courses in the areas of water resources, land use and natural resources, planning and sustainability, and hazardous materials management are offered by UC Davis Extension throughout the year.

The UC Office of the President also offers Capital Programs Institute courses in person and online that deal with sustainability issues.


A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education courses are accessible to all UC Davis staff. Sustainability-related coursework is available on a class-by-class basis, or through certificate programs.

There are many external opportunities that are supported by UC Davis for professional development such as the annual GreenBuild conference, seasonal Pacific Gas & Electric classes on sustainability, Green Sports Alliance, the annual Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education conference, and the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference, among other conferences and training opportunities. These venues are regularly attended by staff as well as students working with staff on sustainability topics.

A brief description of how sustainability is included in staff performance reviews :

All employees are required to set a goal related to diversity and inclusion, which becomes part of their performance review.

Goal setting within performance review in the Design and Construction Management unit typically includes updates and training for sustainability issues and code requirements. Evaluation is reviewed for the past year on training accomplished and how it applies to current projects.
