Cool Campus Challenge: a ten campus emissions reduction competition

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

The Cool Campus Challenge was a year-long coordinated system-wide online campaign and competition between ten University of California campuses focusing on behavior change around energy use and emissions.


A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):

19,400 participants (5.3% of UC’s population) took part in the on-line gamified challenge to reduce their personal and campus carbon footprints. Students, staff and faculty participated from all 10 UC campuses as well as the UC Office of the President. The challenge included 37 different pledges to reduce energy and carbon footprints from lighting, computer use, purchasing, heating and cooling, and transportation. Participants submitted over 100,000 personal stories and 20,000 photos verifying completion of actions, with an estimated savings of over 24,000 metric tons of CO2e.

585 staff, 46 faculty, 883 students and 233 lab employees or a total of 1514 individuals from UCSC participated in the online challenge to commit to specific behaviors, totaling 6,753,014 metric tons of emissions reductions.
