The Selim Center for Lifelong Learning at the University of St. Thomas offered two programs that address sustainability:
Biology professor Adam Kay taught a four-week lecture series in the summer of 2017 on urban gardening. The series included sessions that focused on the potential negative effects of urban fertilizer use and research underway by the St. Thomas biology department to measure these effects.
Exercise for the Body and the Mind
This event featured student-led tours of the various sculptures on the scenic south campus, a visit to the university's primary research-focused greenhouse and a short talk, and a visit to the student-focused Stewardship Garden on the southern edge of the campus and a short talk.
Future program: Parks, Cemeteries, & Garden Suburbs: Twin Cities Green Space (June 2018)
Minneapolis & St. Paul are known for their beautiful parks, especially the ones framing our lakes and waterways. Most were the result of intense discussion and careful planning in the late nineteenth century and involved one of the premier landscape architects in the country, H.W.S. Cleveland. This lecture series will examine these important places and other planned green spaces--cemeteries and garden suburbs--as enduring and important features of the Twin Cities.
