A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:

Student permit data is used to calculate a close approximation of how many students use personal a vehicle as their primary mode of transportation. (total non-storage, annual student parking permits + 75% of non-storage, temporary student parking permits) / total enrollment. This finding is strengthened by the student residence geocode data shows that approximately 96.5% of students live within 3 miles of Grounds. This was conducted in spring of 2019.

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:

UVA's Department of Parking and Transportation (P&T) partners with the University's Center for Survey Research to conduct an employee mode-split survey every three years. The most recent survey was conducted in 2017 which had a 51% response rate with a margin of error at +/- 4.6%. The survey also collects additional information that P&T can use to help focus and guide decision making. The survey scheduled for 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next mode-split survey will most likely be conducted in 2022.
