Total 2,610.78 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 4,249.02 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Figures needed to determine net carbon sinks:
Performance year Baseline year
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 68 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 32 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from non-additional sequestration 984 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 492 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):

The carbon sinks include composting, the sale of pounds of recycled materials off-campus, and the carbon sequestration estimated for the Warren Wilson Forest.

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 2,601.01 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 4,217.02 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date July 1, 2018 July 1, 2013
End date June 30, 2019 June 30, 2014

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:

Warren Wilson College set a goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2020 from 2007-2008 emission levels which included attaining the goal with the purchase of carbon offsets. We have discontinued that practice and our current focus is to improve the actual carbon footprint of our campus and its operations. An inventory of our emissions has been conducted every year until 2013-2014. Because we no longer purchase carbon offsets for our on-site purchased electricity use, we have adjusted our baseline to 2014, a year we purchased no offsets. In addition, we must update our Climate Action Plan with ACUPCC in 2020 and this update will reflect the baseline change.

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
705,558 Gross square feet

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.00 MtCO2e per square foot

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:

The greatest impact in GHG emissions reduction has been upgrades in HVAC systems in select high energy-using buildings on campus with aging units and the installation of a greater number of geothermal wells in the three buildings that heat and cool with them. The HVAC units replaced on campus each reduced energy use by nearly 50%. Also, we insulated one highly energy intensive building on campus that houses music classes and this, too, has made a huge difference.

Additional documentation to support the submission:
Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

Staff and faculty who live in rental houses and personally owned homes on campus have not been included in the number of on-campus residents because their utilities are not paid for by the College.Data has been gathered for the GHG inventory from Facilities Management staff and the College's Accounting Office. Data has been entered into the SIMAP Reporting tool.
The data included in this report has been modified to correct a data error noted by the STARS reviewer and to modify some measurements based upon the use of a newer GHG metric recommended by the SIMAP review team. The SIMAP external audit has approved our inventory.
