Frequently Asked Questions

How has this credit changed from STARS 2.1 to 2.2?

No changes were made under version 2.2.

Can sustainable event planning be recognized under this credit?

This credit is intended to recognize programming and student learning about sustainability (e.g., informing students about the campus’ sustainability programming or educating participants about local foods being served during orientation activities). Incorporating sustainability strategies into event planning (e.g., making recycling bins accessible or avoiding use of bottled beverages during orientation) does not qualify. Sustainable event planning efforts may be captured elsewhere in STARS (IN 18: Green Event Certification).

Example Responses

  • Cornell University – The response references a co-curricular “sustainability module” that is required for all incoming undergraduate first-year and transfer students.
  • SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry – Comprehensive description of orientation activities. Includes links to recordings of virtual orientation programming.
  • University of California, Berkeley – Outlines orientation activities for both undergraduate and graduate students, including detailed descriptions with links. Good reporting example for larger institutions.
  • University of California, Irvine – Response includes information for undergraduate students, graduate students, and all students. In addition to sustainability programming in traditional orientation activities, a campus sustainability fair is also regularly offered.

Common Issues Identified During Review

  • Descriptive fields must support affirmative responses. If transfer and/or entering graduate students is checked, then the description should back this up.
