A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:

The most recent assessment has shown that commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is generally high among Macalester staff and faculty. 96% of survey respondents recognized the value of DEI and 78% of respondents felt that working towards DEI goals was directly related to their job. Overall satisfaction with the campus climate was on par with ranking from other liberal arts colleges conducting similar surveys. Interestingly, while most people felt that they themselves were committed to DEI, perceptions of colleagues commitment to DEI initiatives was generally lower. The survey also revealed opportunities for improvement in terms of generating a sense of belonging on campus for all people.

As part of Macalester’s ”Imagine, Macalester” strategic plan, we established social responsibility as a foundational imperative, an integral and necessary principle that will be a priority in every aspect of the strategic plan implementation. We understand this as our responsibility to “advance equity and social justice, anti-racism, environmental justice and climate action, and global citizenship on our campus, in our community, and in the wider world. Expand access to groups historically excluded from higher education, including first-generation college students.” We are developing actions and changes that will support employee well-being, student success, faculty and staff recruitment and retention, an innovative curriculum, and creating an accessible campus that aligns with the values of the college.
