A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:

The culture assessment was developed by our Sustainability Engagement Subcommittee to assess basic sustainability behaviors by students, faculty and staff, and to collect information to help improve programs. This survey will be repeated each year to measure change over time.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

The survey was online. A link to the faculty/staff survey was posted on the weekly newsletter, that goes out to all faculty and staff, for two weeks. Emails were also sent to all department heads to share the link to the survey with employees.

The student survey was shared with faculty to share with students in classes. The information was also shared with student group advisors to promote to various student groups. Tabling was also done in the student union to encourage students to complete the survey.


A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

357 Students completed the survey. As well as, 333 faculty and staff members. The results of the initial survey identified several areas for the university to improve education, awareness and overall performance. The MSU Sustainability Engagement Subcommittee has already identified several projects for the team to address over the next year. Results of the survey, and associated action plans, will also support the universities efforts to achieve sustainability strategic goals.
