The NU Idling Reduction Requirement was established to eliminate unnecessary idling of vehicles in order to reduce the community's exposure to exhaust from gasoline and diesel engines. Additionally, it was applied to educate and inform the NU community about the health and environmental effects of gasoline and diesel exhaust. It limits idling for more than five minutes on NU property and while operating vehicles owned by NU. In addition, the University has limited vehicular traffic on campus and instituted a pedestrian friendly campus. Combined with our campus arboretum, the University strives for a healthy environment for living and learning.

The air emissions are calculated through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection's Source Registration reporting requirement for Title V entities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The emissions are reported annually.
