Red Raider Trader

A brief description of the campaign:

Red Raider Trader is an effort to reduce waste and save departmental funds by allowing departments to swap unwanted supplies and equipment with other TTU departments. We encourage departments to bring supplies and non-controlled/non-capitalized equipment your department no longer needs. Attendees do not have to donate or take items in order to participate.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The positive impact of this event is that it reduces the need for departments to purchase materials they might find at the Red Raider Trader event. Surplus categorizes and collects data on the items remaining after the event. Some materials are donated after the event, reducing the amount of materials going to the landfill.

Plastic Free July

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Texas Tech spearheads research initiatives year-round when it comes to consuming less plastic and identifying alternative materials. One example is the research being conducted by the Department of Environmental Toxicology in using cotton to absorb toxic oil as well as alternative material to plastic, such as cotton nonwoven wipes. https://today.ttu.edu/posts/2021/07/Stories/University-community-joins-plastic-free-July-challenge


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The campaign encouraged departments and students to reduce the use of single-use plastics. The campaign provided alternatives to single-use plastics. The positive outcome is that students taking the pledge to be plastic-free, or at least reduce their plastic consumption, are more likely to build on the month to build long-term habits.


A brief description of other sustainability-related outreach campaigns:

Move Out, Give Back
The City of Lubbock Solid Waste Department, in partnership with Texas Tech University, hosts the “Move Out Give Back” event during Spring Semester Move Out. The “Move Out Give Back” initiative provides an opportunity for students to donate reusable items from their residence halls or apartments instead of throwing them away after they move out. Three temporary drop-off sites will be available for students living both on and off campus to donate reusable items such as nonperishable foods, hard surface furniture and small, working appliances. Students also are encouraged to bring damaged or broken items that are too large for a dumpster so they may be disposed of properly. Attendants will be present to assist in determining if items are appropriate to donate.
