A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Sustainability is featured throughout orientation. The Office for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Office of Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, held an interactive, 2-hour workshop called "Meeting the Challenges of Our Time" for all first-year and transfer students. The workshop included an overview of sustainability at UR, an introduction to our nested model of sustainability action, and the opportunity to design solutions to sustainability challenges. All first-year and transfer students were provided with a "welcome kit" comprised of a reusable bag, reusable Klean Kanteen water bottle, and link to the Spiders' Guide to Sustainable Living.
The Office for Sustainability also tables at Orientation Express, an opportunity for new students to meet all offices that might be of use to them while they are on campus. Sustainability is prominently featured in welcome materials for incoming students. The Office for Sustainability and Rethink Waste team provide sustainability education and recycling/composting training for all Orientation Advisors and Resident Assistants, which are passed on to students throughout welcome week. Signs about waste reduction and how to recycle are also posted prominently in the residence halls during move-in. Lastly, the Office for Sustainability presents as part of Roadmap, a program designed to help new students make choices that maximize the opportunities the University of Richmond offers and better prepare them to face critical decisions for their future through intentional and developmental experiences.
