A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Sustainability Office participates in many events and activities during Orientation week (O-week). One of the big feature events is the Resource and Involvement Fair organized by the Centre for Student Engagement (CSE). At this event, our office engages with students to spread awareness about sustainability on campus, as well as play interactive games like waste sorting, and trivia. Additionally, our student waste ambassadors participated in an Orientation Shoreline Clean-up event at the adjacent city park to campus, Erindale Park which includes the Credit River. Our office also participates in Student Housing and Residence Life (SHRL) events such as Res Fest and Door Knocking, aimed to specifically engage with first year students staying in Residence.
Apart from participating in O-week events, our office also collaborates with the UTM Student Union (UTMSU) to integrate sustainability into the operational side of O-week. For example, the UTMSU hosted a carnival and BBQ on campus, so we worked with our Grounds team to ensure we had adequate waste, recycling, and compost bins around campus for students to use.
O-week is open to all new to UTM students and is offered free of charge.
