Which of the following best describes the institution’s approach to rainwater management?:
Comprehensive policies, plans or guidelines that require LID practices for all new projects

A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:

In the previous three years (2021 to date), the University has installed six structural best management practices - bioretention, permeable pavers, extended detention, cistern, and a wet pond, and is currently installing two other cisterns. The cisterns harvest rainwater for use in chiller plant cooling towers. Overall, UVA has more than 110 rainwater management practices of a variety of types.

A copy of the institution’s rainwater management policy, plan, and/or guidelines:
A brief description of the institution’s rainwater management policy, plan, and/or guidelines that supports the responses above:

UVA has adopted more stringent thresholds for requiring implementation of rainwater management practices than required by state regulation as outline in our Annual Standards and Specifications (AS&S) for Stormwater Management and Erosion and Sediment Control. Rainwater management is required for land disturbing projects over 6,000 SF in portions of campus in the City of Charlottesville and over 10,000 SF in portions of campus in Albemarle County. The menu of practices allowed and the manner in which compliance is demonstrated promote use of LID practices, especially those that reduce stormwater runoff through infiltration or evapotranspiration. UVA’s Facility Design Guidelines also encourage projects to manage their stormwater requirements on-site using LID techniques that attempt to reconnect stormwater to the natural hydrologic cycle.
